It’s all about LIGHT! Learn how to light and enhance your portrait, craft, jewelry, artwork & product photography with natural light and/or with an electronic flash. Hands-on demos using umbrellas, soft boxes, reflectors and filters will help you create dramatic lighting!

Learn posing techniques for portrait photos of family, friends, colleagues, your baseball or soccer teams, group photos, weddings and more in natural light, or combined with an external flash.

In this hands-on workshop, learn how to shape with light using inexpensive photographic umbrellas, reflectors, bounce flash attachments and light modifiers like softboxes for unique lighting effects!

Lessons on flash fill techniques, camera settings, lens choices, metering and more will advance your skills. Sessions will include posed model photography, both indoors and outdoors (weather permitting) using various sets and backdrops, portable flash umbrellas, plus hands-on group photography.

Four challenging assignments with helpful critique will boost your skills!

Dates: Tuesday February 27, March 5, 12, 19, & 26, 2024

Skill level: Advanced. Suggested prerequisites: Digital Photo 101 or Digital Photo 201

Mostly in English, with questions answered in English and French.

Recommended for DSLR & mirrorless cameras.
An external flash (Speedlight) is recommended
Pop-up camera flashes may be used if you don't have one.
Bring your camera and flash operating manuals

Course Outline:

- How to take effective portraits in natural light
- How to pose and make people feel comfortable in front of a camera
- How to use reflectors and whiteboards to provide fill light
- How to use inexpensive reflective and shoot-through umbrellas
- Balancing flash and ambient light for best results
- Best lenses to use for portraiture and craft/product photography
- Indoor lighting setups for superb portraits
- Creating homemade filters for intriguing effects
- How to use radio triggers to remotely fire camera flashes

Photoshop Elements/Photoshop CC and/or Lightroom Classic editing instruction :

- White Balance: How to select and Why it's important!
- How to colour-correct portraits with difficult lighting
- Easy retouching with the Healing and Clone tools
- Resizing and Sharpening techniques for prints and posting to social media, Etsy, etc
- How to create stunning black and white images plus how to add a touch of sepia toning for that antique look!

Workshop information, a Posing Guide and assignment guidelines will be emailed to participants after each class for at-home reading and practice.

Four stimulating assignments with helpful critiques and a Q&A session, will provide you with new skills! Participants will be encouraged to submit completed projects on a USB key to evaluate and provide helpful critiques.

A Resource List of recommended books and a Where to Buy directory of lighting gear will be supplied.
