2012 Winter Photography Workshops

Composition is about aesthetics. This workshop focuses on how to give your images impact by using visual design principles, and by composing with light, colour, and in Black & White. Creative elements will be explored through the use of filters, stitching images to create panoramas, and processing techniques with both Photoshop Elements 9 & 10, and with Photoshop CS4 & 5.

An evening of outdoor night photography at Stewart Hall is included.

Skill level: Advanced. Suggested prerequisites: Digital Photo 101 & 201
Recommended for persons with digital SLR (DSLR) cameras
such as Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Pentax, Sony etc.
Presented mostly in English.

Course Outline :

Composition methodology to produce endearing imagery
Mastering Manual Mode - to create superior images
Camera Spot Meters – How to read and use successfully
Black & White conversions – 3 different methods for best results
Graduated neutral density filters – balancing light levels in a scene
Creating panoramic images

Adobe Photoshop Elements & CS processing techniques :

- Correcting perspective (example - leaning buildings)
- “Stitching” photos in PS to create dynamic panoramics
- Using curves to enhance B&W images
- Sepia toning for that old “antique” look in B&W
- Techniques for BIG enlargements

Each week a handout will be given with the evening’s topic providing some detailed infor- mation. A weekly photo assignment will be given to help participants practice techniques learned in the workshops. Participants are encouraged to bring in their cameras with flash cards to evaluate and provide, helpful critique of the project images.
